I've been feeling more than a bit homesick for the old LiveJournal days lately anyway, and with the latest round of fuckery happening on Tumblr it looks like it's finally time for me to start getting moved in over here.

So hi! I'm Seldon. I write things. Mostly The World Ends With You on the fandom front--and I don't think there's too much of that on this site at the moment, but hey, we'll see what happens, I guess. If nothing else I plan to jump in on some of the multifandom prompt communities a bit and maybe start dipping my toes back into RP-land.

My fics can be found on AO3, also under the name [archiveofourown.org profile] lostboywriting

Hope to see you around!

Dear Creator,

Hello! I'm Seldon, [archiveofourown.org profile] lostboywriting on AO3. For this exchange I'm requesting fic in Sunless Sea, Octopath Traveler, The World Ends With You, and original works.

I'm still pretty new to multifandom exchanges. I hope this letter is clear; if there's anything you've got questions about please don't hesitate to ask via the mods. There's a lot in here but optional details are completely optional; outside of my DNW list, please pay attention to exactly as much of this letter as you find helpful and feel free to ignore the rest.

Thank you! I am psyched for this exchange and I can't wait to read whatever you write for me. 💜

Contents:

General Info - DNWs, likes, and a note about tags & prompts
Original Work - Immortal Demon Lord / His Devoted Young Servant, Temple Guardian / Male Thief
Original Works - New Tenant & Haunted House

Who finished their 18K origfic fantasy novella draft? I did! Hell yes.

(Who is never ever again saying to a teacher: 'You know, I was thinking maybe I should write a novella for my final project?' Also me.)

In all seriousness though: I am super proud of myself right now. I have mixed feelings about the story itself but it's a complete, basically coherent and at least vaguely polished draft that's got, like, a proper plot arc and fleshed-out characters and identifiable themes and whatnot, where I can look at every piece of it and go: 'okay, this could definitely still be done better, but I know what I was trying to do here and why it's important and where it fits in with the rest.'

Further thoughts and reflections )

All this would be why I wasn't around much for January and why I haven't yet read and/or commented on various things I promised to read and/or comment on. Will be getting to those this week!

Posted a short thing in [community profile] fan_flashworks.

Hope everyone's been having as peaceful and happy an end-of-December as their lives allow, whatever this time of year looks like for you. It's been a quiet time here. Eating homemade pizza, playing cards with my parents, taking dog for walks in the snow, and trying to finish up a horrible novella draft has been about the extent of it.

I did get the courage up to join in the first fandom gift exchange I've ever done, which was a lot of fun--this TWEWY exchange on AO3. Very small, cozy, and low commitment/low stress, and I really liked having a holiday thing to do that was about making something special for someone rather than buying things. The fics that came out of it were really lovely, too; I have to reread a couple of the longer ones more closely, but I enjoyed all of them. Going to refrain from commenting in any more detail for now because--well, there are only six fics in total, and the authors are anonymous for the next week, so I'd have to either (a) make it obvious which one was mine or (b) wax poetic about mine alongside all the others, and I don't want to do either of those things. But if you're into TWEWY, definitely check them out.

I enjoyed it enough that I suspect I'm going to jump into the Chocolate Box ([community profile] chocolateboxcomm), which is NOT small but has a very low required wordcount. That one's a bit more daunting in that I'll have to offer to write for at least four fandoms, and it's been a long while since I've written anything but TWEWY. With a 300 word minimum, though, I figure it's a good way to dip my toes in. Poking through things that people have nominated, I'd definitely be comfortable writing GLaDOS/Chell Portal ficlets or--if I brushed the dust off a bit--some of the pairings in Utena, so I just need to pick at least one more. I think I could probably write at least a halfway passable MCU Loki, so maybe I should make this my way of nudging myself to try it.

How's the end of the year treating everyone else?

As somebody who is by nature horribly finicky about word choice and sentence structure, I swear one of the most liberating realizations I’ve had in my entire existence as a writer has been the fact that in a rough draft I can just leave words out if I needed to. And if I mark the missing bits with something that I don’t use anywhere else (I usually use [ ] or [...]) then I can just ctrl+F that thing when I’ve got everything else in place, and go back to figure out how to fill in the blanks.

(Or figure out if I even need to, as half the time the idea or sentence structure that my brain was so insistent had to be right there or nothing was going to work ever turns out to have been completely unnecessary once more of the thing was written.)

Which is super useful for actually getting through things! Because sometimes I've got a sentence that would be completely fine, except there's a word or two I just can't quite find, and the sentence won't work without them--or sometimes I'm writing dialogue and I think I need an action or introspection beat somewhere for it to flow correctly, but I don't quite know what it needs to be. And if I'm not careful, I'll get so caught up in trying to figure it out then and there that I'll completely stall out.

Then again, sometimes all I've got is a vague sentiment and a word or two, and so my draft will be going along just fine and then I hit a note that reads: [something something inexorable something, Kitaniji’s a dramatic bastard].

Ah well. Rough drafts gonna rough draft.

5 and 20 for Joshua or Neku? (I enjoyed your 750-word essay btw)

[tumblr.com profile] lostboywriting:

Thank you! Someone else just after you asked me 20 for Joshua, so I'll go with Neku for these. (And haha, thank you about the essay ^^;)

5. Guilty pleasures

beat? beat’s kinda cute? neku hasn’t noticed. )

joshua, 15 + 18?

15. What it takes to make them cry

meredithsock beat you to this one by just a few minutes. ^^; I've been pondering it today, but don't think I have anything more to add.

18. Things they'll never admit

(CW — mention of being forcibly outed)

Never, hm? Had to ponder this one a bit. Joshua would admit most things under the right circumstances, if he thought doing so would ultimately be to his advantage.

But there are some things that have roots much, much deeper than he ever wants anyone to go digging, and he will Nope away from the subjects at pretty much all costs. Here are a few:

15 and joshua PLEASE

[tumblr.com profile] lostboywriting:

HI THERE I hope you wanted a rambly 750-word essay in response to this, because you’re getting one.

15. What it would take to make them cry

I mean, first off, bold of you to assume Joshua is capable of tears.

(…Is what Joshua would say, and of course he’s completely honest and objective about himself at all times. 💜)

ahaha. you really. you really started me off with an easy one there. sob )

Okay so I don’t think you intended this to prompt a short essay but here’s one anyway:
